The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 has them witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early yearsâa moment that may just hold the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Cavern
When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.
In keeping with mysteries this season, the truth about the encounter originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic giftsâabilities he would genetically impart to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he battles the influence of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
