The child of former South African President Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked accusations at the start of her trial in the coastal city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she posted on social media in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her dad.

A week of chaos in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including theft and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (ÂŁ2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of inciting this violence and confronts charges of encouragement to commit terror acts and public disorder.

Context of the Case

The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KZN and came after the ex-leader's detention for defying a court order to testify at an investigation into claims of graft while he was in power.

The defendant has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative previously calling the state's case as weak.

She has also repeatedly claimed the charges against her were an effort to address political grievances with her dad after he established his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.

Backing and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and kinship harassment" against the previous head of state and his family.

A handful of followers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.

The defense has argued that the proof presented by prosecutors is inadequate and does not have concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Case

  • Digital posts from four years ago form the foundation of the government's evidence
  • Violent demonstrations in recent years resulted in major fatalities and economic damage
  • The individual on trial is charged with multiple charges of incitement to violence
  • Court trials are expected to proceed for numerous court sessions

The court case continues as all parties present their cases before the judicial authority in what is expected to be a highly monitored judicial process with significant political ramifications for South Africa.
