British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
